Safe and Sound Protocol
Area of PracticeWhat is Safe and Sound Protocol? (SSP)
- A therapeutic intervention that is the “distilled essence of trust.” Music that has been put through an algorithm designed by Dr. Stephen Porges with the intention of taking away frequencies in a progressive pattern with the intent of the music supporting the nervous system to shift out of a state of defense and into a state of safety.
- SSP has been likened to the intonation of a mother’s voice, the sounds that may bring a baby from crying to settle. This is built into our DNA as a signal of safety.
In many cases of trauma, the problem is the intonation caused the person to become accessible and then the person was traumatized by the person to whom they were accessible. SO now the memory/thought/feeling is “If I ever feel safe, I am going to be injured.” - SSP helps you feel safe again. It goes directly to our brain stem area and calms the body. It can bring back the feeling of safety.
- It is 5 hours of music delivered by a trained provider who enhances the experience of safety being offered by the music.
- SSP helps bring safety to anyone who experiences symptoms of dysregulation: anxiety, depression, feeling stuck, feelings of panic, angry outbursts, perfectionism, mood swings. Safety helps us be able to do the work to feel better.
- SSP helps any therapy work better. EMDR works more efficiently with SSP. Stephen Porges states, “SSP creates a fertile valley for EMDR to work.”
- Safe and Sound is delivered in 5 sessions at $30 a session, for a total of $150.
